Protect over 70 hectares of Atlantic rainforest and stop the deforestation
In the province of Misiones in northeastern Argentina lies a unique piece of the Atlantic Rainforest that we at Sagittaria are committed to protecting. Since 2023, Indigenous families from the Guaraní community of Yvy Pora have been living on this 71.7-hectare property in San Vicente. This community plays an indispensable role in preserving this precious ecosystem. Through their presence, the forest is sustainably protected and thus safeguarded against the threat of deforestation.
An Endangered Oasis of Biodiversity
The 70 hectares of land is rich in valuable timber, which is in high demand on the international market, raising the land price to around 2,500 Swiss francs per hectare. The high price of timber could lead to increased deforestation, but we are doing everything we can to preserve this natural wealth. Argentinian forestry specialist Guillermo Küppers confirmed to us that the forest is in excellent condition. The large number of plant species, including endangered tree species and rare orchids, testifies to the health and resilience of the entire ecosystem.
Part of the land has been cleared before, but Küpper’s report gives hope: the surrounding, untouched forest area provides the ideal conditions for the natural regeneration of these areas. This makes the protection of the still intact parts all the more important, as they form the centrepiece for the restoration of the entire area.
A stronghold against deforestation
The presence of the Yvy Pora community on this land is the best protection available to the rainforest. These people live in balance with nature and protect the forest from destruction through their traditional way of life. Their constant presence serves as a living shield against illegal logging and other threats. By protecting the rainforest, we are also protecting the livelihood of this community, which maintains a rich tradition in symbiosis with nature.
